NatureScouter lands on Terumbu Pempang Tengah!

15th July 2010
Terumbu Pempang Tengah, Singapore

You would probably be thinking where the hell that is or what the hell it is. The name itself is quite a mouthful. It is one of three submerged reefs close to each other. 'Tengah' means middle in Malay and of course the reef sits right in the middle of the other two.

This is actually the first time that the gang went to check out this reef and I had the chance to join them! Once again it was an amphibious landing and a tricky one too.

A quick survey of the reef, which is a freaking big reef, reveals once again that some of the corals are also bleaching here.

Despite being a submerged reef, this definite can't compare to Cyrene. Nevertheless, there were still signs of much life on this reef, especially the corals. I did managed to find a decorator crab, a flatworm, a clownfish hiding in an anemone etc. Others found nudibranchs, fluted giant clam, common sea stars and some others. You can see more at WildSingapore's blogpost.

While exploring one side of the reef, I saw in the not-so-far distance something interesting. First I saw a buoy, then I realised that there was a sunken boat. Still curious how the hell it got there and what actually happened but I guess we will never find out.

After what seems like eternity, everyone eventually gathered at the starting point. The hot weather made the exploratory trip just a little tiring so we decided it's about time to leave. While on the trip back, Ria mentioned about exploring the last reef of the three the next time round. I'm definitely looking forward to that but the fact that the last reef is in fact the biggest of the three kinda daunts me... Let's hope that the weather would be more gentle then.
