Exactly eight months ago, I led a team of Singapore Rovers along with two Maldives Rovers to Sikkim, India on a Youth Expedition Project. This project was the 3rd Scouts of the World Voluntary Service project under the Singapore Base. We were there to help improve the studying conditions of two schools in two areas high up in the mountainous regions. You can read more about the expedition here.
The place is so surreal and people so friendly and warm. You will wake up every morning to the sight of the magnificent Himalayas, so close yet so far. It's like those places that you will only see in magazines. And it's true indeed, for you can see for yourself the story on Discovery Channel Magazine Issue 20 (August 2010). The title of the article is aptly named 'Higher Education', by Jeremy Torr whom we met during the trip. We really appreciate Jeremy for writing such a wonderful article that stirred up emotions and allow us to relive the moment. You can find the pages from the article and link which is hosted on the World Organisation of Scout Movement, Asia-Pacific Region website.
Besides the magazine article, I think it's only right to share what the kids feel too and in their own words. All these while, stories are told by us. About two months back, through a friend of ours, we received a precious letter from the kids of the school we helped. I need say no more as the following letter would better describe my feelings for the people and the place. I will be back there some day...
wow ... :D
