NatureScouter goes Black

In support of Earth Hour, NatureScouter is going black.

A little history...
With its origin in Sydney in March 2007, Earth Hour is a movement to urge people to take action against climate change by switching off all electrical appliances including lights, for an hour on the last Saturday in March. And indeed 2.2 million Australians and 2,100 businesses turned off their electrical appliances, including the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House! This created such a huge media sensation that it was repeated on 29th March 2008, with many other major global cities joining in.

In July 2008, the Singapore Youth delegation to the 10th World Scout Youth Forum in Korea  brought the idea of Earth Hour to the forum and it was a success with the opening night's dinner lit only by candles. The idea garnered 141 signatures in support from Scouts all over the world, and was put up as a recommendation to the World Scout Conference that followed. The small Earth Hour initiative at the forum eventually prompted the re-enforcement of the long-time partnership between WOSM and WWF.

In 2009, The Singapore Scout Association was approached by WWF Singapore in view of a partnership for the first ever official Earth Hour Singapore. On 28th March 2009, Singapore Scouts officially supported WWF Singapore in managing the Earth Hour event at Esplanade Park, Singapore. Our Scouts were the ones who coordinated the 'black-out' of Singapore's city skyline.

This year, 2010, The Singapore Scout Association is supporting WWF Singapore in the event once again, and hopefully many more years in the future. Come on down to Esplanade Park this coming Saturday, 27th March 2010, to join in the fun and witness the second 'black-out' of our city skyline.

Why is NatureScouter all black?
For those who have visited this blog before would definitely know it's difference. It's just me playing a small little part. After chancing upon a blog post in regards to darker visual displays consuming lesser power than bright visual displays (same concept when you set your laptop on power save mode, it gets dimmer and uses less power), I decided to do so in support for Earth Hour.

I tried to do a little calculation on the reduction of amount of CO2 released. According to my site meter report, there's an average of 7 visitors daily, each viewing an average of 4 pages, staying about 90 seconds on each page. Using that and the method of calculation, the energy difference when I change to a darker page is about 0.0105 KWH. That translate to about 5.25grams lesser of CO2 released and savings of ... well let's just take it as less than a cent. However, picture the effect of this implementation on web pages with heavy traffic like Google. That's probably something. How true is that? You never know but hey, it doesn't hurt.

So yes, this blog is staying black for a week for Earth Hour. Think Earth Hour, Every Hour.
